Nanjing is the birthplace of the Republic of China (1912-1949) and the resting place of its founder, Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The influential Chinese revolutionist was buried at the centre of the Purple Mountain. His mausoleum has become a site of pilgrimage for many and it is also a piece of classic architectural works, combining Chinese and Western elements. After climbing the 392 stairs leading to the coffin chamber at the top, you will be rewarded with a stunning view over the Purple Mountain.
