Sri Lanka’s 30 Day Visa-Free For Aussie Travellers

Sri Lanka 30 day Visa-free for Australian travellers

Sri Lanka 30-Day Free ETA For Australian Travellers

Sri Lanka has just made travel even easier and more affordable for Australians.

From 25 May 2026, Australian passport holders (along with nationals of 39 other countries) are now eligible for a completely free 30-day Tourist Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

This new initiative is part of Sri Lanka’s major push to boost tourism and welcome back visitors to the island’s stunning beaches, ancient temples, wildlife safaris and warm hospitality. Official confirmation is available on the Sri Lanka Department of Immigration & Emigration website and Australia’s Smartraveller advice.

Key details

  • Eligible Australian travellers can enter Sri Lanka with a free Tourist ETA for up to 30 days for tourism purposes.
  • The scheme covers 40 countries including Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA, Canada, and most major European and Asian nations.
  • Double-entry is permitted within the 30-day validity period (on the second entry you receive the remaining balance of days).
  • The ETA is free of charge — the previous fee (around USD $50) has been fully waived for tourism visits under this policy.

Important Conditions to Know

  • Maximum stay: 30 days per visit.
  • Purpose: Strictly for tourism (business visits may require a separate visa category — check with Sri Lankan authorities if needed).
  • Application required: You must apply online before travel via the official ETA portal: eta.gov.lk. Facilities for obtaining an ETA on arrival at Colombo airport are limited.
  • Passport requirements: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure from Sri Lanka.
  • Final entry approval rests with Sri Lankan immigration officers on arrival.

Multiple Visits & Flexibility

  • There is no limit on the number of free ETA entries during the scheme’s validity.
  • You can leave and re-enter Sri Lanka as long as each stay does not exceed the remaining days on your 30-day authorisation.
  • Perfect for multi-destination trips combining Sri Lanka with the Maldives, India or Thailand.

When You Still Need a Visa or Extension

  • If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, you can apply for an extension inside Sri Lanka (fees apply).
  • A traditional visa (or different ETA category) is required for work, study, journalism, or any non-tourist purpose.
  • Always ensure your travel plans meet entry requirements — immigration has the final say.

Final Tip

Prepare your documents in advance, have proof of onward/return travel and sufficient funds ready, and apply for your free ETA a few days before departure. It’s quick, straightforward, and done entirely online. For guided tours, the process is even smoother with full ground support.
