A Family Adventure Through Sri Lanka

A family adventure to Sri Lanka with MW Tours

A Family Adventure Through Sri Lanka

By Harley Young, Marketing Manager MW Tours

Recently, my family and I had the incredible opportunity to experience our Sri Lanka Express tour — and it turned out to be one of the most enriching and memorable journeys we’ve ever taken together.

From the moment we landed, we were welcomed with open arms and the kind of genuine hospitality that instantly makes you feel at home.

Our journey began in Negombo, where a refreshing dip in the sea and some fresh seafood at the markets provided the perfect way to ease into island life. The blend of colonial charm and coastal serenity made it a wonderful first stop.

Then on to the Cultural Triangle, where Sri Lanka’s magic truly began to unfold. Climbing the Sigiriya Rock Fortress — with its ancient frescoes and panoramic views — was a definite highlight. It’s not every day you can tell your children they’ve just conquered a UNESCO World Heritage Site before lunch! Nearby, we explored the Dambulla Cave Temple, where centuries-old Buddha statues and vivid murals of kings and concubines left all of us in awe.

From there, we journeyed to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s spiritual heart. The visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic was both enlightening and fascinating, offering a glimpse into the country’s deep devotion and Buddist past. Our evening walk around Kandy Lake, with the sound of temple drums in the distance, was one of those moments you wish you could bottle up and take home. Kandy also offered a perfect chance for a little souvenir shopping — my wife picked up a pair of beautiful white sapphire earrings, expertly haggled down. Don’t forget to claim your tax refund at the airport before you leave!

Our journey continued to Nuwara Eliya, affectionately known as “Little England,” where we enjoyed cool mountain air, scenic gardens, and a touch of colonial charm. The drive through Sri Lanka’s lush tea country was simply spectacular — rolling green hills, misty valleys, and endless stretches of tea plantations. At a working tea estate, we learned how the perfect cup of Ceylon tea is made and tried our hand at picking tea leaves on the steep slopes of the plantation before enjoying some local sponge cake and several rounds of English Breakfast tea.

From there, we descended to Yala National Park, where the excitement reached new heights on our morning safari. The leopard on this occasion was elusive; however, there were some lucky travellers who did see them on the same day.

We rounded out our tour in Galle, wandering its historic Dutch fort walls and cobblestone streets. In Galle Fort, we found a seafood restaurant that served up the freshest fish, prawns, and crab — all washed down with a lovely glass of wine… or two.

Finally, on our return to Colombo, a vibrant metropolis with a more relaxed pace compared to some other destinations, we enjoyed some outlet shopping. Sri Lanka has a strong garment industry, and a number of local outlets carry seconds and overruns of internationally recognised brands — a great opportunity for a last-minute splurge. The city’s coastal areas and nearby towns, including the scenic railway line down the coast, offer plenty of cafés, restaurants, and nightlife, adding charm to Colombo’s energy.

Looking back, what stood out most wasn’t just the scenery or the incredible sites — it was the people. Everywhere we went, we were met with warmth, pride, and genuine kindness. Sri Lanka may be a small island, but it offers a world of experiences.

It was the perfect balance of culture, adventure, and relaxation — and for a family of four, it delivered memories we’ll be talking about for years to come.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Conquering the ancient Sigiriya Rock Fortress with panoramic views of the surrounding jungle.
Climbing the Sigiriya Rock Fortress was a definite highlight of our journey. The ancient frescoes and panoramic views from the top make it a UNESCO World Heritage Site worth every step. Seeing the kids’ excitement as they reached the summit made it even more memorable — a true mix of history, adventure, and family fun.

Lush Tea Plantations of Nuwara Eliya

Rolling green hills and misty valleys at a working tea estate in Nuwara Eliya.
Driving through Sri Lanka’s tea country was simply spectacular. Endless rolling hills and misty valleys stretched as far as the eye could see, dotted with neatly manicured tea bushes. At a working tea estate, we learned how the perfect cup of Ceylon tea is harvested, dried, and brewed — and even got to sample a fresh cup straight from the source.

Yala National Park Safari

Eyeing the wilderness during our morning safari in Yala National Park.
In Yala National Park, the morning safari brought us face-to-face with Sri Lanka’s incredible wildlife. While the elusive leopard remained just out of sight on this occasion, elephants, peacocks, and monkeys provided plenty of excitement. The thrill of spotting these creatures in their natural habitat was an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
