The remarkable Mogao Caves are situated on the Echoing Sand Mountain and is a collection of over 500 caves in the cliffs to the south of the city. Mogao Caves are a shrine to Buddhist art treasures and contain the historic documents of cultural, religious, social and commercial activity. Some of the cave entrances are 5 stories and reach up to 50m in height.
